Newborn Visits Q & A

What are newborn visits?

Newborn visits are a type of screening procedure used to check-in on your baby’s health and well-being.

The team at Texas Primary & Pediatric Care recommends you schedule a newborn visit about a week after giving birth. During the appointment, your provider can answer questions and discuss your concerns.

What happens during newborn visits?

At Texas Primary & Pediatric Care, newborn visits include several distinct steps, including:

Physical exam

The first step of a newborn visit is a physical exam. Your child’s provider starts by weighing and measuring the baby. It’s normal for your baby to lose weight in the first week between their delivery and check-up. However, by two weeks, your child starts gaining weight rapidly.

During the physical, your child’s provider checks for jaundice, a condition that may cause your baby’s skin to appear yellow. They also evaluate your child’s umbilical stump and circumcision (if your child had one).

Growth and developmental milestones

The second step of a newborn visit is an evaluation of their growth and developmental milestones. By the first visit, your child should be able to move their arms and legs, lift their head briefly when lying on their stomach, and focus on objects within 8-15 inches.

If your child doesn’t achieve these milestones, it may point to an abnormality or underlying condition.

Questions and answers

Lastly, your child’s provider sets aside time to answer any questions you have. If you’re a first-time parent, it’s normal to feel concerned or apprehensive. Your child’s provider can give you tips on bathing your baby, feeding your baby, trimming your baby’s nails, and setting up a comfortable sleeping environment.

If you’ve noticed any unusual symptoms or medical concerns, feel free to bring those up during this time as well.

When should I schedule my child’s next appointment?

After a newborn visit, you schedule a one-month check-up. A one-month check-up is another quick, in-office exam used to monitor your baby’s growth and development. Baby’s grow rapidly, so regular check-ups ensure they meet all necessary milestones. They can also alert you to potentially serious health problems.
