Well Child Visit Q & A

What is a well-child visit?

Rapid physical and developmental changes mark the first few months and years of your child’s life. That’s why it’s important to have your child assessed regularly by a doctor. You need to make sure those changes are happening the way they should.

A well-child visit is your doctor’s opportunity to evaluate your child and provide prompt interventions, if necessary. During a well-child visit, your child’s provider:

  • Records your child’s vital signs
  • Updates your child’s health records
  • Performs a physical exam
  • Administers appropriate vaccinations
  • Performs relevant screenings
  • Assesses developmental milestones

Your child’s provider can also offer counseling on various health topics.

How often are well-child visits recommended?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends frequent well-child visits at the beginning of a child’s life, tapering off to yearly visits after toddlerhood.

Newborns through toddlers should see a doctor about a week after birth, and at one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, two years, 2.5 years, and three years. After age three, your child should see the doctor once a year.

Of course, you should also make an appointment with your child’s doctor any time your child is sick or injured.

What services do you provide at well-child visits?

The providers at Texas Primary & Pediatric Care offer the following services during well-child visits:

  • Infant care instruction
  • Vaccinations for children
  • Health education and immunizations
  • Postpartum depression screenings
  • Growth charts
  • Obesity screening

The team also offers sports, camp, and preoperative physicals.

What are the benefits of well-child visits?

Well-child visits help prevent and identify health problems before they escalate. Your doctor is your child’s best health advocate.

Your child’s doctor is also an advocate for parents, providing valuable resources and counseling. They can answer any questions you have and offer reassurance if you have concerns.

Well-child visits give you, your child, and your doctor a chance to build a friendly, familial relationship. Your doctor can detect changes more easily when they see your child regularly.

Texas Primary & Pediatric Care serves the whole family. If you’d like to take your child to the same clinic as the rest of your family, contact them online or over the phone for an appointment.
