Office Procedures Q & A
What are office procedures?
Office procedures take many forms, from intravenous infusions to minor surgeries. Texas Primary & Pediatric Care offers numerous office procedures, many of which can save you the trouble of having to visit a hospital for diagnosis or treatment.
One of the most common types of office procedures is injections. Routine immunizations for your child, vitamin shots, and injections of anti-inflammatories, pain-relieving medications, and antibiotics are some examples.
Some injections are intramuscular, meaning the needle goes into a muscle, while others are intravenous, meaning the needle goes into a vein. Another type of injection that the Texas Primary & Pediatric Care team does quite often is joint injections for arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis.
What diagnostic and preventive office procedures are available?
Some of the diagnostic and preventive procedures available in-office at Texas Primary & Pediatric Care include:
Skin biopsy
A skin biopsy is a tiny sample of skin taken from a suspicious lesion or mark on your skin. Your provider submits the sample for laboratory analysis, where they can determine if there's any form of skin cancer present.
Aspiration
Aspiration is where your provider draws off fluid from a lump or cyst using a fine needle. The fluid then goes to the lab for analysis. Aspiration is also useful for removing fluid from painful cysts or abscesses.
Fluoride varnish
Fluoride varnish is a substance that coats your child's teeth, helping to prevent tooth decay. Twice yearly fluoride varnish treatment can make a significant difference to children's teeth.
Cancer screening
Screening exams for breast, prostate, cervical, and other cancers are all routine office procedures.
Can office procedures help treat my condition?
Many types of office procedures are effective treatments for a range of conditions:
Minor skin procedures
Cysts (fluid-filled lumps) and abscesses (pus-filled lumps) sometimes need incision and drainage, where your provider cuts into the skin and drains the fluid out. Your provider can also excise (cut out) cysts or abscesses that are proving particularly problematic as well as cancerous skin lesions.
Nebulizations
A nebulizer converts liquid medicine into a mist that you can breathe in. You might need to use a nebulizer if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or pneumonia. Your child might need to undergo nebulization if they have severe asthma or cystic fibrosis.
IV fluids
IV (intravenous) fluids might be necessary if you're dehydrated, very sick, or have lost a significant amount of blood. The liquid used is a saline infusion – a blend of salts and water that rehydrates your body and restores healthy functioning.
